I'm not big on the New Years resolution concept. They are often very open-ended like "go to the gym 4 days a week", but then there really is no end goal in mind. Sure, the goal there is to be a more healthy person, but that's not narrow enough. A good health goal is saying "I want to reach and maintain a body weight of 160 pounds throughout the year". That's something concrete that you can quantify, and if you write that down and consistently look at it and keep track of how far along you are, that is going to motivate you to keep going.
If you're working independently or running your own business it's important to have concrete goals for these endeavors as well. Where do you want to take your business in 2015? Is there some way you can quantify your progress? Just to give you some examples to work off of, I've decided to open up a little and share my business goals for 2015.
- Triple my income - Since I went independent I've been making less money than when I was at my day job. If I were to triple my income I would be making more than enough to survive, and also be able to put money into really expanding the business, and to set myself up to achieve my longer-term goals.
- Buy a new computer - Since I started Designsbyhall on a 13" MacBook Pro that I bought in 2011. At the time, the business wasn't even a twinkle in my eye, with no intention of ever doing serious design work. The fact is that over the past year my needs have quickly outgrown this machine, and it's time to upgrade. My goal is to buy a 27" iMac in cash by the end of 2015.
Even without sharing the numbers, it's pretty clear that these goals are ones that can be easily measured. I can easily take my monthly income from 2014 since going independent, multiply that by 3, and measure my income from 2015 against that. In terms of the iMac, I have set up a savings account just for this goal and have set a plan to save a percentage of my monthly income, even if it means putting lower priority on things I enjoy.
So what are your goals for 2015? How can you quantify them? What will you do to keep yourself motivated and on track? Did you write the answers down somewhere safe? Feel free to share your goals with people you trust, but don't let anybody discourage you.
Happy New Year! Here's to a fulfilling 2015!
